Who doesn't like finding great deals? I know I do. I'm not talking 30% off or a $50 top. I'm talking 95% off of some name brand finds. In the last few years thrifting has become my new hobby. I've always loved collecting what others may call "junk". I have collected a few great thrift finds over a few weeks and wanted to share them with you along with some thrifting tips.
I don't remember how much each piece cost me since it has been a few years since I found them.
Tip #1 -Buy What Fits
If you are not a sewer I would suggest you find something that doesn't require a lot of alterations. Finding thrift items that need alterations may end up collecting dust in your closet. I am speaking from experience. I have a few of unfinished thrift store projects that are collecting dust because I haven't had the time to create the beauty that I saw in them. Also, reconstructing every broken clothing you find results in incomplete outfits. I bought a few items I had to reconstruct in the past month, but between my "sew little time" I had to be mindful of the projects I chose to complete.
Tip #2 - Name Brands
Look for name brands. I am always excited when I find name brand clothes for pennies Thrift Store. I was able to find a few pieces from Armani Exchange, Gap, American Eagle, Forever 21, Steve Madden and HM. I definitely lucked up this time.
Tip #3 - Think Vintage
Fashion trends are always recycled and you can almost always find vintage wear at the Thrift Store. Mixing vintage pieces with modern trends makes an outfit trendy chic.
Tip #4 - Have a Plan
Thrifting is always a hit or miss, but having a plan before you shop can make shopping a lot easier. The key is to know what you're looking for from a pair of loafer shoes to a turtleneck sweater. It is a good start because thrifting can get overwhelming.
Tip #5 - Shop Discount Days Early
Nowadays thrifting is the new thing. Many people thrift which means you have to catch the early bird specials. Meaning: Get in early on discount days. I remember I made this mistake and missed out on a great piece (Louis Vuitton Computer Case). I still get mad about this even though it happened over a few years ago. It would have literally cost me $2.00 at Goodwill's Clearance store. Everything there is $0.99 cents a pound. STEAL!!!!
Tip #6 - Shop location
Location is everything when it comes to thrift stores. The closer the thrift store is to higher income areas the better the finds. Although, it was a few years ago which means pounds ago I found this crochet beaded halter top with tags still attached in Goodwill Boutique in Winter Park, FL. Beware the prices at this Goodwill are higher than your typical Goodwill Stores in other areas.
Tip #7 - Find Garage Sales/Estate Sales
You will be surprised what you can find at Garage, Yard, and Estate Sales. I once found a vintage 1946 Singer Machine still in good shape with original attachments. I can't wait to DIY this and make it good as new. The best part of garage sales etc. is that you can negotiate prices. I was able to get the sewing machine for $100.00.
